Ministers have squashed Argyll & Bute Council’s hopes to delay an imminent landfill ban in a bid to save “hundreds of thousands” in taxpayers’ cash and “essential services”.

Meanwhile, new figures have revealed that the number of new homes being built in Argyll & Bute hit its lowest number on record last year, with the local authority forced to put homeless people into B&Bs.

Seven nights of roadworks will start on the A828 road at Connel Bridge on Thursday, with a 30-minutge bridge closures at 30-minute intervals.

An Oban-based firefighter is challenging himself to 365 days of ice cold water dips to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Elsewhere, festival organisers are calling for people to come up with designs and decorations for the annual Christmas Tree Festival, which will be held in St Conan’s Kirk, Lochawe in December.

Lismore is launching a community shares offer, encouraging residents, holiday home owners and visitors to help them net the £70,000 needed to take over the island’s store and post office.

Luing is also in the midst of a housing needs survey to build a picture of what the island’s needs are now and could be in the future to help bring in support and funds for affordable housing.
