Meet Mairi at the threshold

Acclaimed folksinger, songwriter and musician Mairi Campbell is back at the Benderloch Palladium, this time with her new show, Meet Me At The Threshold.

This is one of the first outings for this concert-style gig of songs, anecdotes, readings and – wait for it – collective singing.

So far the tour has taken in Findhorn and the Black Isle – next stop after Benderloch will be Music Port festival in Whitby, Yorkshire.

“We all know about thresholds, we all have them in our lives and I wanted to address that from the stage,” she said.

The collective singing element will be nothing forced, Mhairi will gently draw the audience in through the power and potential of them to meet her at their own thresholds.

“You don’t have to sing but there will be a gentle invitation to find the sound in the room together. When I’m using my voice, I always think about how it would be if the audience could also fill the space with sound, making it together. I will set it up with a rift then see what follow, we can play around with it. For some people using their voice to sing is not in their comfort zone but this will be a supportive experience and it will be surprising, said Mairi who will be at The Victory Hall on Thursday October 12 at 7pm.

Each of her songs respond to a threshold of some sort – be it the time between day and night, as in Robert Burns’ Lea Rig, or speaking from the other side, as in Crossing the Line.

The stage will be graced with a large stone pendulum which Mairi has been accompanying since 2015. This ancient mill stone was found on her great grandmother’s croft on the island of Lismore. Throughout the event the pendulum’s presence is a reminder of Mother Earth and her grounding influence in the face of flux.

Benderloch Palladium promotors Joy and Campbell Cameron said that having world-renowned Mairi return to the venue after a break in live gigs “reminds us why we adore music nights”.

Joy added: “Campbell and I are delighted to be able to host Mairi Campbell in the Victory Hall to relaunch live music events in Benderloch once more.

“We are in  talks with more artistes for the journey into the festive period and through winter. We have new and returning local and global musicians planned and are delighted at the hugely positive response of our supportive audience.

“The new hall bar is a splendid asset and we are grateful to the hall committee for organising the licensing of this for our gigs.”
