Memorial bench unveiled in honour of Neenie

Carradale has honoured the memory of one of the community’s most beloved characters on what would have been his 70th birthday.

Last Thursday (September 27), a bench commemorating Iain MacDougall, best known as Neenie, was unveiled at the village’s Ashbank Hotel.

The money for the bench, which was made by Kenneth Campbell, was gifted to Neenie’s sister Mairi by a Campbeltown shopkeeper who raised it in a collection tin.

The shopkeeper asked that it be used to honour the memory of Neenie, who died on November 12 last year.

Carradale stalwart Argyll MacMillan led the unveiling by removing a Campbeltown Loyal Rangers Supporters Club flag from the seat at an emotional gathering of villagers, friends and family.

Carradale and Saddell Parish Church has also paid tribute to Neenie by unveiling a collection box in his memory, and money raised by friends funded the installation of a granite memorial stone at Ibrox Stadium, home of his beloved Rangers Football Club.

“I am overwhelmed by all that has been done in Neenie’s memory,” said Mairi. “It’s absolutely wonderful.”

A spokesperson for the Ashbank Hotel said: “We so proud to be looking after his lovely bench. We miss him every day.”
