Banavie take top honours in hotly-contested Primary Cross Country Championships

Banavie Primary School stole the show at this year’s Lochaber Primaries Cross Country Running Championships, winning the Samuel and Partner’s team shield.

They took first, second and third places in the boys’ category and first and ninth places in the girls’ race.

Boys podium, from left, Toby Smith, Kai Tresidder and Alistair Cant.

Although still in primary five, Kai Tresidder won the boys’ race in nine minutes and 49 seconds. He was just 14 seconds slower than the course record, set last year by his older brother Aaron, when he was in primary seven. It will be exciting to see how much Kai improves over the next two years.

Second place went to Toby Smith in 9.57, while Alistair Cant took third in 10.21.

Girls podium, from left, Carys Rodgers, Lily Cant and Erin MacPherson.

It was a family affair as Alistair’s sister Lily was racing in the girl’s event. Now in primary seven, Lily beat her own course record set last year by 24 seconds, finishing in a time of 10.07.

The silver medal went to Erin MacPherson from Acharacle Primary School in 10.57 with Carys Rodgers from Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar (BSGLA) taking the bronze in 11.09.

As well as racing as individuals, pupils’ final placings counted towards the team event.

Each school can enter a squad of up to three boys and three girls with the top four results – two boys and two girls – going towards the overall team score.

This year a total of 90 children, from 20 Lochaber schools from as far away as Lochaline, Kilhoan, Mallaig and Invergarry, took part.

Second team, Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar.
Third team, Caol Primary School.

The top six places in the team event went to: 1 Banavie; 2 BSGLA; 3 Caol; 4 Spean Bridge; 5= Inverlochy and Mallaig.

Thanks go to all the participants, parents and staff who came along to support the event and to help on the day, as well as the Lochaber Active Schools team and primary physical education staff who organised this year’s event.
