Speak up on Fort William town centre future

The public is to get another say on what they want Fort William town centre to look like in future.

Following a successful town centre masterplan stakeholder engagement session, a wider public event will be held on Wednesday November 15 as part of Lochaber Ideas Week.

The public is invited to attend the free event at the Nevis Centre, Fort William, between noon and 7pm following the ‘Around Lochaber in 80 Tables’ event.

The first step in the preparation of the town centre masterplan for Fort William has been completed by Threesixty Architecture.

The public engagement event offers the opportunity to speak to the project team and to see the presentation and initial ideas of how the town could look.

Economy and infrastructure committee chairman councillor Ken Gowans said: “We are delighted the Fort William Town Centre Masterplan is progressing and now at a stage where over the coming months, key stakeholders and the public can begin to visualise how a modern and inclusive Fort William town centre could look and work.

“This process is an opportunity for the public to contribute and work collaboratively with the design team and we encourage community involvement to ensure that all ideas and local input is considered at this key stage.”

Architect-Director for Threesixty Rory Kellet said: “We have enjoyed hearing from a diverse range of interests in the town. It is clear there is a shared ambition to transform Fort William town centre into a vibrant, textured, varied, safe and inclusive place to live, work and play.

“The team looks forward to sharing our findings with a wider audience and some of our initial thoughts to improve the town centre.”

The development of the masterplan is a collaboration between The Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Lochaber Chamber of Commerce.
