Exhibition is celebration of Jonathan Livingston Seagull

This October, Saltwater Gallery at Cladach is hosting an exhibition of new work inspired by Richard Bach’s classic novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull, first published in 1970.

It is a short tale of a seagull which discovers the joy of flight, wants to chase his dreams and be the best self he can be. The other gulls are unable to understand his passion and dreams.

There will be oil paintings, charcoal drawings, watercolours, inks and more, alongside music and text.

The idea for the exhibition came from Senja Brendon remembering the car journeys of her youth, when her mother would play the Neil Diamond soundtrack to the film of the book and they would all sing along. It was some of her late mother’s favourite music.

Wearing headphones with tracks on repeat, Senja’s work is a response to the book and music.

With 35 years’ painting experience, this is her first solo exhibition based on a story. Step into the gallery and let her take you on Jonathan’s journey.

With the soundtrack from the movie playing softly in the background, we will start you on your own voyage of discovery.

Truth, dream, love, inspiration, awareness, experience, challenge, transcend, joy and belief are some of the feelings the book has inspired and we hope this exhibition will be a reflection of this.

Senja is a renowned contemporary seascape artist and the resident artist at Saltwater Gallery. If she is not out storm chasing, you can usually find her in the gallery’s studio space, using the highest quality materials to create her dramatic seascapes and distinctive waves.

Senja’s deep love and long-standing connection to the sea, honed from years of surfing and, more recently, wild swimming. She has spent many years studying the ocean’s moods and changing forms, often travelling across Scotland to seek inspiration for her art.

Senja said: “The last few months have been really busy, preparing for my upcoming show. After 35 years of painting, in some form or other, I have embarked on my first narrative show.

“Another first for me was wearing headphones whilst painting, listening to the tracks on repeat from Neil Diamond’s album. Each painting is a response to the music. It was a fascinating experience, one which I will use again, I’m sure.”

Senja is dedicating this show to her mum, who died some years ago, as this was one of her favourite books and album.

Senja added: “We would love to welcome you to the gallery but, if you are unable to attend, please contact the gallery on 01770 307331 if you wish to join our mailing list for online information. Thank you everyone for your continued support of my work.”
