Free meals at lunch club thanks to winter funding

Arran Community & Voluntary Service (Arran CVS) has been awarded funding to support the work of its volunteer-led lunch club from the Arran community fund.

As reported in last week’s Banner, the lunch club received £1,680 in the latest round of grants which saw more than £44,000 handed out to community groups, funded by Scottish Power Renewables’ Beinn an Tuirc 3 Windfarm and administered by Arran Community Council.

The club is open to all older residents on Arran with the purpose of bringing people together to socialise and enjoy a nutritious, low-cost meal. The new funding means these will now be offered free during the winter.

Sheridan Waldon, development officer at Arran CVS, said: “With the continuing cost of living crisis we were concerned older people on fixed budgets were really struggling to both eat and heat. We therefore applied for funding from the community fund to enable us to provide meals in a friendly, warm space for free throughout the winter.

“We are grateful to Arran Community Council for awarding us the funding for this project as it means there will be no cost for older people attending the lunch club through until the start of spring.”

The project is in partnership with Trust Housing which provides the use of its kitchens and lounges in the retirement developments at McKelvie Road in Lamlash and Glen Estate in Brodick. The lunch club meets weekly, alternating between the Lamlash and Brodick venues.

The next lunch club will be at McKelvie Road on Monday October 16 at 12.30pm, then fortnightly there from this date.

The next lunch club at Glen Estate will be on Monday October 23 at noon, then fortnightly there from this date.

Sheridan added: “We have an amazing team of volunteers who prepare and serve a tasty two-course meal. We are always looking to grow our volunteer team, so if you are interested in volunteering for a few hours once a fortnight, please get in touch.”

Anyone wishing to attend should complete a membership form available from Arran CVS by telephoning 01770 600611 or by visiting its website.
