Lucky escape

Many of us will have been left frustrated by last weekend’s travel chaos – and some may continue to be affected by the landslides that struck many parts of Argyll – but people’s safety is of paramount importance and it is extremely fortunate that nobody was injured.

Campbeltown residents Fiona and Kiera Smith had a very lucky escape, just getting out of their car before it was swept off the road. And although it cancelled Fiona’s birthday celebrations, the pair are feeling lucky to be alive.

The number and scale of the landslides across Argyll is hard to comprehend and the clear-up operation is expected to take weeks in the worst-hit areas.

As always, events like these bring out the very best in the community, from the emergency services and contractors tasked with rescuing people and clearing up the debris, to the volunteers and individuals who rallied to help those who were stranded.

Effectively turned into an island and cut-off from the rest of mainland Scotland through the road closures, coupled with some ferry disruptions, residents of Tarbert and Campbeltown even agreed to put historic rivalries aside and embrace each other in the “Isle of Kintyre”!
