Repair café shows Fort William the beauty of fixing

Residents in Fort William had the opportunity to have items fixed by local experts when a pilot repair café was set up at New Connections.

The free event hosted on Saturday October 7 by The Workshop Studios, Fort William’s Men’s Shed, and Lochaber Enviro, also saw hungry guests catered for by Nimble Fingers.

Also present were the Cairngorm Repair Café and a translator for non-English speakers, which helped members of the Polish, Russian and Ukrainian communities attend.

Carrie Kirkegaard, manager at New Connections, said the repair café was a success.

“It went great. We had way more people then we thought, even with the terrible weather,” she said.

“We managed to repair 12 items which were so varied and included a sewing machine, a dehumidifier, circuit board, and clothes.

“Two items couldn’t be fixed, one of which was a pair of spectacles. So we are on the look out for spectacle repairers for next time.”

The success of the pilot has led to plans to have another repair café in the new year.
