AR tour explores Lews Castle

A new augmented reality (AR) tour of Lews Castle in Stornoway has been launched by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Heritage Service.

Using a mobile phone, visitors to the 19th-century castle will see a series of tour guides appear on screen to talk them through rooms and locations.

The guides include actors from the Wee Pheonix Theatre Group, plus local councillor Donald Macsween, portraying historical figures such as James Matheson, Lady Matheson, Lord Leverhulme, and a crofter from the Bernera Riots.

Photographs and virtual information boards will also appear to provide further insight into historical life in Lewis.

The Lews Castle AR tour will include a trip to the ballroom.

Matt Denny, assistant general manager at Lews Castle, said there had only been positive feedback to the AR tour.

He added: “I’ve just had another walk around the castle and have found it to be very informative whilst maintaining a high level of interest. I’ve never experienced an AR tour quite like it! The knowledge gained will certainly assist the team here. We frequently get asked questions regarding the history of Lews Castle from both our guests and visitors alike.”

The AR tour has developed in collaboration with specialist company Wintor, with funding support from the Art Fund.

The tour is being made free to access until March 2024 in order to allow locals to experience it before the busy summer season begins.
