Campbeltown Boys back together

Some former players of Campbeltown Boys Amateur Football Club met recently for an informal get together of the side which existed for 32 years.

The club was formed in 1979 and entered the Scottish Amateur Football League (SAFL) in 1983. It climbed through the divisions as runners up of the 8th and 7th division, before winning the 6th division in 1985-86.

The Boys, under the management of the influential Tommy MacPherson, continued to rise through the divisionsand in the 1993/94 season, it won the 1st division and reached the Coronation Cup Final.

Two seasons later, the Boys won the newly-formed Premier 2 Division and were runners up in Premier 1, gaining promotion to the top league in the SAFL – something that was an aspiration for the club when it entered the league.

One former player said: “You spend a lot of time training, playing and travelling with your team mates and, over the years, a lot of us kept bumping in to each other saying we should get a get-together.

“Meeting Tommy regularly and realising it was 40 years since the club entered the SAFL gave us the idea to mark the occasion and perhaps we can look to do something more formal in the future.

“It was a fantastic day seeing so many former teams mates and we were all delighted Tommy MacPherson could manage along to share it and get a picture with those who were able to attend. They were certainly happy days for us all and we have some fantastic memories and stories.

“Special thanks to the staff at the Fiddlers Inn for hosting us and Carole Green who provided food for us. The Greens were former sponsors of the Boys.”
