Updated timetable for Skye A87 resurfacing

BEAR Scotland has released a new timetable of road closures for resurfacing improvements on the A87 on Skye. The timetable supersedes one released on October 10, and has been caused by inclement weather.

The updated timetable now reads:

A87 Borve: September September 18 – September 25
A87 North of Sligachan/Caiplach: September 26 – October 23
A87 Glen Torra: October 24 – October 25
Kyleakin Roundabout: October 30 – November 1

As originally planned, work will be carried out overnight between 7pm and 7am, excluding weekends. Within this time the road will be closed in both directions except during amnesty periods of escorted access.

The amnesties will be at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12am (midnight), 2am, and 4am.

Residential access within the affected closures will be maintained whenever feasible. Emergency service vehicles will have continuous access and public transport will be accommodated as much as possible.

The A87 Kyleakin Quarry will undergo works October 26-27. However, its broader road width will permit access to remain throughout the resurfacing works, with a temporary traffic system and 10mph convoy system in operation.

A 30mph speed limit will be implemented outside work hours to protect the temporary road surface.

Work at the A87 North of Broadford has been postponed until March 2024.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “We understand the potential disruption and inconvenience caused by road closures, so we’ve strategically timed these projects on the A87 for night time hours when traffic is lighter, to lessen the disturbance to both our local residents and travellers.

“BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland wish to express our appreciation to the community for their patience and understanding as we undertake this vital upgrade to the A87.”

The October 10 schedule itself was a reworking of an initial schedule announced in September which had to be delayed due to weather conditions and the need to avoid a clash with works being undertaken by Scottish Water in Broadford.
