It was a tough start for the hosts with the referee awarding West a penalty try but Oban responded well with Fie Cunningham and Veronica Speirs putting in some big tackles.

West saw a break in Oban’s defence and secured another try on the wing making the score 0-14 to the travelling team.

Quick plays saw Oban moving closer to West’s try line and Julie Campbell fought her way over to give the girls their first score of the game.

Well-matched forward packs made for competitive scrummaging but West used their backs and their inside centre broke through the line to score another try.

This was closely followed by another from the visiting fly-half who broke out of a tackle and scored on the wing, taking the points to 5-24.

Oban’s line-outs were strong throughout the game and a successful play from 10 to inside centre and captain Kirsty Sinclair saw the hosts close the gap to 12-24.

Straight from the re-start Oban fought hard to defend against West and a dropped ball and quick reactions from Sinclair saw Oban awarded a penalty try.

The hosts fought hard to defend. Strong tackles from Jade Dowell, Tilly Cunningham and Arden Binnie made West work hard to get anywhere.

Oban dropped to 14 players when Katie Hamilton was forced off injured and West took advantage of their extra player and scored another try – 19-29.

Katie Hamilton returned to the field for the remaining 10 minutes but unfortunately Ellie Picken was given a team yellow card for one too many penalties meaning Oban dropped back to 14 to finish the game.

“Thanks to all of our supporters as always and to West of Scotland for travelling,” said a team spokesperson.

The ladies travel to Greenock this Sunday, October 22. Kick off 2pm. Supporters welcome.
