Oban club prepares to host squash elites

Oban Tennis and Squash Club is gearing up for another professional gents squash event at Atlantis Leisure later this month.

This second edition of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) event will take place from Friday October 27 to Sunday October 29.

It will be the second largest PSA to be held in Scotland this year.

Last year’s inaugural Oban Challenger 3 Pro Squash event was a great success for the club and this year it was asked if it could go up a level.

It will see 24 professional male players from Scotland, England, the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand and Zimbabwe take part.

They will all be vying to be awarded the Oban crown on Sunday and a share of the £3,000 prize fund.

These competitions have significant importance to these players because they help them earn ranking points which lift them up the professional world ranking ladder.

Oban Tennis and Squash Club’s Jackie Kersley said: “A huge thank you to our sponsors this year. Without their kind generosity, we could not hold this event.”

The sponsors include Alchemy; Aggregate Industries; MKM; Rexel; Oban Electrical Services; Maurice Lockhart; D MacLean Heating; Allan McKechnie Hair; Sports Shop; Outside Edge and Invercreran Lodge.

Jackie added: “It’s great for the town to have all these guys descend on our wee club. Many thanks to Nick and the staff at Atlantis Leisure who always go way above the call of duty for these events.

“Also to Kevin Moran at Scottish Squash who is always at the end of the phone to help me out and to everyone that has helped me get this event off the ground.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to the club to watch and support these talented squash players as they entertain us with fantastic squash matches, watched over by referees from Inverness and Aberdeen.”

The PSA action will kick-off at Atlantis Leisure at 11am on Friday October 27, with 16 matches on the first day.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be held on Saturday, with play beginning at 12.30pm, before the final on Sunday at 2pm.

“It’s going to be an amazing weekend of great squash. We are so looking forward to the weekend and the high standard of squash these guys will bring to our club,” added Jackie.
