Temporary bridge could be up next week

A temporary replacement for Kilmelford’s demolished bridge should be in place by the middle of next week.

Contractors are working 24-hour shifts to get the job done, reports an Argyll and Bute Council update on social media.

The current diversion route is via the C29 Loch Avich road and B845 Taynuilt but it is not suitable for heavy goods vehicles and has a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes.

Alternatives for a shorter diversion are being looked at.

The council says it is confident it will be able to get all pupils to school on Monday.  This covers St Columba’s, Oban High School and Kilninver Primary School with details to be hopefully shared on Facebook later.

Commercial general waste collections scheduled for today between Ardfern and Kilmelford were rescheduled for Friday October 27.

Anyone receiving health and social care in the area will be contacted to discuss any temporary arrangements needed.

The council is continuing to look at what support is available for businesses, as it can not give financial assistance itself.

The Scottish Government’s Bellwin Scheme has been triggered to help meet infrastructure costs but community support is not included.

In the meantime, free advice and information is available through Business Gateway services on 01546 604555 or by emailing business.gateway@argyll-bute.gov.uk – Business Gateway support .

“We would also encourage local people to help support local businesses wherever they can at this very challenging time,” said a council spokesperson.

Urgent repair works are also continuing on Kilninver bridge with a weight restriction in place. West Coast Motors is putting on a minibus to serve Seil and Cuan communities.
