Action packed game for Oban rugby ladies

West Division One

Greenock Wanderers 52 Oban Lorne Ladies 31

Oban Lorne ladies hit the road on Sunday to play Greenock Wanderers for the second time this season.

The visitors started the game slowly, with an early turn over of possession for Greenock resulting in a lot of pressure on the Oban defence leading to Greenock’s first score of the game.

Oban ladies responded quickly with a positive re-start kick from Ellie Picken which was  picked up by Kirsty Sinclair who broke the line allowing Oban to put pressure on the Greenock defence with Julie Campbell powering over to score. A successful conversion by Picken brought the scores back even.

After another successful re-start kick, Oban gained possession, putting pressure on the Greenock defence but, unfortunately for Oban, a mistake by Picken resulted in Greenock intercepting the ball in their own 22 and running the length of the park for their second score of the game.

From the re-start, Greenock applied pressure on Oban with this visitors having to do the majority of defending.

The scrums were well matched and Oban’s lineout was strong.

From a penalty, Oban gained ground into the Greenock 22 and with a strong lineout and team play, it allowed captain Kirsty Sinclair to break the line to score. Unfortunately, the conversion was not successful.

Greenock continued to apply pressure, making Oban work hard in defence and not allowing them to have much attacking ball. The Oban defence held strong but, unfortunately, the Greenock pressure was too much and they broke through for their third try of the game. Half time: Greenock 21 Oban 12.

Straight from the re-start, Oban were down to 14 players as a result of injury. Things weren’t looking good for Oban with a tough battle ahead to come back with a player less. Fair play to the Oban ladies, they upped their game.

During the second half, Oban found their momentum with a lot of attacking pressure being put on the Greenock defence resulting in another three tries for Oban from Julie Campbell, Kirsty Sinclair and Elaine Mitchell, with Rachel MacDonald converting two out of three.

Unfortunately for Oban though this wasn’t enough with the one man overlap for Greenock working in their favour resulting in them getting a further five tries in the second half. Final score 52-31.
