Taekwon-do students go for gold in UK’s biggest competition

Students of SG Taekwon-Do Scottish Highlands have returned to Campbeltown from the T-UK British Championships with an incredible haul of 24 medals, including 12 golds.

British champions Finn Grady and Lacey McKenzie, who both also won gold medals in 2022.

Juniors and adults from the Campbeltown-based martial art school battled it out against more than 600 competitors at the annual championships in Coventry this month.

Medal winners Rhys Hart, Shannon Milloy and Evan Downie.

As well as their 12 gold medals, the club took home six silvers and six bronzes, with some competitors winning multiple medals across various sparring, patterns and destruction classes.

The 2023 SG Taekwon-Do Scottish Highlands medal-winners were: Finn Grady, Erphy MacKenzie, Shannon Milloy, Lacey McKenzie, Cayden Cleland, Nicole Anderson, Yasmin Grady, Rhys Hart, Sean Grady Jnr, Laila Morran, Islay Lavery, Evan Downie, Cara Macpherson, Emma Morran and Addie Graham.

This impressive tally helped the T-UK Scotland team be crowned overall winners of the tournament, with SG Taekwon-Do Scottish Highlands named the club with the highest number of individual medals.

The club’s members built on their success from last year, when they won nine gold medals during their first time taking part in the championships.

Former world and European champion Sean Grady established the school in Campbeltown in 2021 and spoke of his continuing pride in his students.

“This is a really outstanding achievement,” said Mr Grady. “I was really looking forward to the 2023 championships, just coming off of a three-month, gruelling training camp.

“I knew my team were ready to go – they were well-drilled, fitness and intensity levels where high; it was just about getting everyone down there and putting in good performances.”

Laila Morran won two medals.

He added: “I am absolutely delighted, again, to come home with all these medals and to have even more gold medals than last year.

“It was a masterclass from all students and I am extremely proud of them all.

“I would like to thank all the parents for their continued support; we really do have a special group here.”
