Etive closes its doors for final time

Oban’s only Michelin-ranked restaurant has closed its doors.

Etive restaurant’s owners sent out a heavy-hearted message to friends and guests this week announcing its permanent closure.

“After much consideration and with profound sadness, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and we are deeply grateful for the support and patronage you have shown us throughout the last six years,” said the message from chef John McNulty and sommelier David Lapsley.

The message went on to express sincere gratitude, saying they had “wonderful memories and cherished moments”, and it had been an honour.

“We will always remember the smiles, laughter, and shared meals that took place within our walls. The friendships we’ve formed and the relationships we’ve built are treasures we will carry with us long into our futures,” the message added.

And it ended by blaming the closure on “various challenges” saying  “the current circumstances have made it increasingly difficult to continue our operations. We are grateful for your understanding during these trying times.”

The restaurant in Stevenson Street opened in 2017 and in May this year it was included in the  Michelin Guide UK article of inspectors’ favourite 2022/23 dishes.

The inspector-approved dish was Isle of Lewis turbot, Shetland mussels and hispi cabbage.
