Brilliant boxing expected at weekend fight night

Seconds are almost out as Lochaber Phoenix boxers prepare to take on opponents from across Scotland this Saturday, November 11, in Fort William’s Nevis Centre for the club’s Home Show.

In a planned evening of 15 bouts, family, friends and boxing fans can watch Lochaber’s finest put months of hard work and training into action as they face carefully matched opponents from a range of clubs in what is guaranteed to be an action packed experience.

Apart from showing off tremendous talent, the show is one of the club’s major fund-raising events which helps it to meet operating expenses which have increased considerably this year.

With a much-valued role in Lochaber, the Corpach based club is open to everyone aged nine and above with three training sessions a week for juniors, 9 to 16 years, and seniors, 16 upwards), often with additional sessions for ‘carded’ boxers who are registered with Boxing Scotland, the national agency which governs the sport.

Many of the Lochaber boxers are already highly regarded champions in their own right, holding titles including ‘Golden Gloves’ Scottish Champion as well as gold and silver medals from national competitions.

The club has also seen several of its boxers called up to the Scotland squad, representing the country in Britain and Europe.

While boxing is often referred to as ‘the loneliest sport’, Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club is based entirely around a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for everyone, with carefully structured training in building strength, stamina, co-ordination and self-confidence.

Fees are kept low so that no-one feels unable to attend for financial reasons and all equipment is supplied by the club.

Head coach Vince Lopez said: “Our boxers have been training hard and are excited about boxing in front of a local audience so we would like as many people as possible to come along and show their support on Saturday.

“We have a full card of bouts at a range of weights which should make for a great night of skilful, exciting and entertaining action.”

Tickets, priced £5, are available from the club gym or at the door on the night. A raffle and other fund-raising activities will also be held to boost club funds.
