‘Spooktacular’ fun for Hallowe’en

Witches, zombies, terrifying clowns, a mangled rabbit and, er, a banana, Yoda and Super Mario – Hallowe’en costume parties at Rockfield and St Columba’s Primary Schools had it all.

Pupils of Rockfield Primary School dressed up for a Hallowe’en fun day on Tuesday October 31. “A huge big thank you to everyone who helped the pupils and staff with their costumes for our Hallowe’en fun day,” the school posted on social media: “You all looked amazing!” The canteen team also cooked up a “fiendish feast” for the children.

“Scary extras” were also on the dinner menu at St Columba’s Primary School, where pupils had a great Hallowe’en filled with lots of spooky activities.

All Hallows’ Eve, the time in the Christian year dedicated to remembering the dead, originates in the festival of Samhain among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland.

Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries,  immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century. Today’s Hallowe’en activities include trick-or-treating, apple bobbing, and carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o’-lanterns.
