Lismore community-run shop could open this month

The new Lismore Community Stores could open its doors later this month – legalities depending.

Lismore Community Trust, a Community Benefit Society, will be considering a recommendation from its interim management board that the shop and Post Office are taken into community ownership at its meeting tonight, Thursday November 9.

Although it has not yet reached its funding target of £70,000 through community shares and other sources to help cover the scheme for the next five years, there is still sufficient money and commitments to take the important step.

“The community support for this enterprise is humbling. Most residents have purchased contributory shares, and others are saying they will before the  November 10 deadline,” said the Trust’s Andy Hough.

If all goes well with legal aspects and such, the doors of Lismore Community Stores could have an opening ceremony on Tuesday November 21.

Residents, holiday home owners, visitors with a love of Lismore and those from far and wide with family links were asked to take up the shares offer and help the community reach its target as soon as possible.

Islanders were invited to invest a minimum of £25, while off-islanders were being asked to buy a minimum of 10 shares for £250. Donations are also be welcome.

“It’s a really significant step for the island and the number of contributor shares bought is fantastic – the community are really getting behind it,” added Mr Hough.

The plan is to be able to staff the shop with paid staff as well as being able to offer work experience and volunteering opportunities and the enterprise is also set to benefit from the Community Transport directors, hugely community spirited offer of their old bus.
