Kilmichael Glen still has ‘many questions’ over floods

Residents of Kilmichael Glen say they still have “many questions” about the severe floods that swept through the River Add area during the extreme weather of October 7 and 8.

The residents attended a community meeting with Argyll and Bute MSP Jenni Minto to seek answers about what they described as a “sudden and severe” torrent of water that flooded their area.

They asked questions on whether any hydroelectric dam up-stream may have been breached during the storm.

Kilmichael Glen residents say they experienced “devastation” when floods caused a huge amount of damage in the area on October 7 and 8.

Mid Argyll councillor Jan Brown said she had been shocked at the “trail of destruction left behind”.

The residents say they are concerned about their ability to obtain property insurance in the future and about any repeat of such sudden flooding.

Kilmichael Glen resident Alphedia Arara Kenchington said: “The community meeting with Jenni was very good. She listened to everyone’s stories.

“It was quite an emotional meeting; difficult to listen to. People were crying.

“It was an extreme weather event but people are not confident [about hydroelectric dams].

“There are still many questions and we are still looking for transparency.”

Councillor Brown told Kilmichael Glen residents she has been asking questions of SSE Renewables about any dams and “intakes” they control in the River Add area.

She posted replies she has received from SSE Renewables on a social media page of the Kilmichael Glen residents saying that no actions were taken by SSE Renewables to release any additional water.
