Oban Lorne RFC round-up

It was another busy weekend for Oban Lorne RFC, with the men’s side and youth sides in action.

On Saturday, Oban Lorne Men were defeated 25-31 by Wigtownshire RFC in Stranraer, meaning they remain sixth in West Region Division 1 (Men’s).

An insufficient number of players for Oban Lorne Ladies saw Biggar RFC awarded a 28-0 win over them in West Region Division 1 (Women’s) on Sunday.

Next weekend will see the ladies also face Wigtownshire away, while the men travel to Motherwell to play Dalziel RFC.

Meanwhile, Oban U16s boys travelled to Lenzie on Saturday to play a three way quarter-final of the National Bowl against Strathendrick/Balfron and Lenzie.

In their first game, Oban defeated Strathendrick/Balfron 35-5, with Archie Johnston (2), Hamish Macintyre, Donald MacCormick and Joe Corns scoring tries as Arran Martin slotted five conversions.

Oban’s youngsters then faced a challenging game against the hosts, with a Freddie Johnson try their only response to a firing Lenzie side in a 5-31 defeat.

However, the win against Strathendrick/Balfron ensured they progressed to the semi-finals of the National Bowl.

After overcoming bus issues, Oban’s scrum and kicking game showed improvement, with notable performances from back rowers Macintyre, Johnston and young prop Stasiu Kupczak.

The next day the Oban Under 14s travelled to Glasgow to take on Ardrossan and Bishopton.

Ardrossan proved to be tough opponents in the first game and deservedly raced into a 31-0 half time lead.

After the interval, Oban won more line breaks and scored a great try through the tenacious scrum-half Finlay Cottier, with Tom Corns adding the extras.

Ardrossan hit back with a try to make the final score 38-7, but it had been a much improved Oban performance, which they continued into their second game against Bishopton.

Cottier’s try in the first minute was followed by braces from Jake Jevons (2) and Arran Budge (2), with Corns adding four conversions to make it 33-5 at half-time.

Oban then scored tries through Lewis Cairns, Felix Hughes, Corns and a Jevons hat-trick to win 75-5 as Corns and Jevons added the extras.
