Highland landscapes will give the lie of the land at a special event on Luing this month celebrating Book Week Scotland.

Seil author James Fenton will be at the Atlantic Islands Centre from 1.30pm to 3pm this Saturday, November 18 to talk about his new book Landscape Change in the Scottish Highlands: Imagination and Reality  which will be out in early December – just in time for Christmas.

Published by Whittles and lavishly illustrated with more than 200 photographs and eight case studies, the book compares the Highlands of the imagination with the reality on the ground and demonstrates how the landscape has changed over the past 250 years.

In the book, James concludes that in spite of all the good words about ‘our fantastic Highland landscape’, in practice we are still allowing landscape damage at an unprecedented rate.

The book also challenges the common perception that the landscape was once covered in a forest, since destroyed by humans: the landscape of the open hill is in fact one of the most natural remaining in Europe, writes James.

Luing’s Iain Cruickshanks and David Ritchie will also be at the centre to share some of their own Highland adventures at this free event.

Hot chocolate and treats from Luing Bakers are another reason to go along.
