Arran finish in top three at regional athletics contest

A team of 22 pupils from Arran primary schools finished in the top three in the Sports Hall Athletics heats at The Portal, Irvine.

The team of 20 and two reserves were selected after competing against pupils from Arran’s seven primary schools at the Sports Hall Athletics Festival at Auchrannie games hall.

Four heats are being held throughout November with six or seven North Ayrshire primary schools at each heat.

At the start of last week, the Arran team travelled to compete in their heat against five other schools. They finished in third place, only six points behind the runners-up.

Results: Dalry primary, 338 points; Abbey primary, 293 points; Arran primaries, 287 points; St Mark’s primary, 266 points; Dykesmains primary, 213 points; and Hayocks primary, 201 points.

Active Schools Co-ordinator Ross Dobson said: “The Arran pupils showed great attitude and determination, punching way above their weight as the Arran team was made up of mainly primary 6 pupils, with mainland schools mostly P7s.

“Thanks to Mrs Ramage for coaching the team during the build-up to the mainland heats and Mrs Ramage and Mrs Duncan for travelling to the mainland with myself and the pupils.”

The final of the Sports Hall Athletics, which will see the top two schools from each heat competing for the North Ayrshire Shield, will be held at The Portal, Irvine, on Thursday December 7.
