Fire station open day marks 20 years in Soroba Road

Oban Community Fire Station marked its 20th anniversary in Soroba Road with an open day.

More than 100 people went along on Saturday, taking part in fun and games to celebrate the station’s double decade.

Partner agencies including Police Scotland were there as well as the RNLI and other community organisations like Hope Kitchen to engage the crowd who had lots to see and do inside and out of the station. Fire crews cutting a wrecked car was just one of the demonstrations and indoor attractions included a bull ride.

Coorie the Belgian Shepherd dog was one of the biggest stars at the event. He and his handler were recently put to international search and rescue work in Morocco after earthquakes struck.

And Oban Fire Station’s high-reach appliance attracted lots of interest.

Mark Gibbings, On-Call Support Watch Commander, said it was a great day and was a good opportunity to build up even more relationships in the community as well as give people the chance to see the station’s equipment and meet the crews.

“The open day was well-attended by more than 100 guests, despite the rain. It was a great way to mark our 20 year milestone in Soroba Road and to push us into the next era,” added Watch Commander Gibbings.

Money was also raised for The Fire Fighters Charity and the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance on the day.
