Woman with Kintyre connections wins lawyer’s memorial prize

A law student with Kintyre connections has won a prize awarded annually in memory of a prominent Campbeltown lawyer.

Isla Kasapidis, from Dunfermline, received the Joe Thomson Memorial Prize at the 2022-23 Strathclyde Law School prizegiving.

The 20-year-old is in her third year studying Scots Law at the University of Strathclyde but currently attends the University of Copenhagen as part of an exchange programme until January 2024.

Isla, who intends to practise family law, returned to Scotland for the award ceremony earlier this month.

She was honoured to accept her prize which is in memory of Mr Thomson, a Campbeltown native who died in 2018, having gained a reputation as one of the leading legal scholars of his generation.

Isla Kasapidis was honoured to accept her prize in memory of Joe Thomson, one of the leading legal scholars of his generation.

Isla is a frequent summer visitor to Kintyre with her parents and grandparents. Her maternal grandmother, Rowan Goldie, née Galbraith, who lives in Fife, was born in Carradale and her parents, Isla’s great grandparents, the late Johnny and Mamie Galbraith, were native to the east Kintyre village.

“Our family is extremely proud of Isla’s achievement winning this prestigious award in family law,” said Rowan. “This award will undoubtedly help Isla take the next step in her career.

“My husband and I have been returning to Carradale for over 50 years, and our family has kept up the tradition.

“My parents moved to Fife in 1956 from Kilmartin and returned ‘home’ to Carradale when my father retired from teaching in 1976.”
