Paper piecing fun for SWI ladies

Members of Southend Scottish Women’s Institute perfected their paper piecing skills at the group’s November meeting.

Margaret Bakes welcomed everyone before handing over to group members Margaret McFarlane and Denise Fawcett.

“Margaret gave us a talk about paper piecing – a form of patchwork that allows you to create precise intricate designs,” said one of the ladies. “Paper patterns are used as a template, with the fabric assembled and stitched directly on to the paper, piece by piece. When the pattern is finished, the paper template is torn away to leave the completed fabric design.

“Margaret and Denise made a Christmas placemat using this patchwork technique. It was amazing how effective it was and how quick it was to make.”

Kathleen Martin thanked Margaret and Denise for such an enjoyable and entertaining meeting.
