Funding boost for Oban’s Royal Mòd

Organisers of next year’s Royal Mòd in Oban are celebrating funding news from Argyll and Bute Council.

At a meeting of the full council last Thursday, councillors approved funding of £25,000 for LiveArgyll to provide staffing for the use of the town’s Corran Halls for the duration of the 2024 celebrations.

Councillors also agreed additional support of £20,000 in response to a request from An Comunn for assistance in meeting the rising costs of staging the event.

The 2024 Mòd will take place from October 11 to 19 in the town – the location of the first event in 1892.

Council Leader Councillor Robin Currie said: “Our ongoing support for the Royal National Mòd is in recognition of the event’s cultural and educational significance, in particular the part it plays in ensuring the continued development of the Gaelic language and the provision of local Mòds.

“I am certain the new funding we have agreed, which is in addition to the existing £120,000 of support which we already pledged to the Mòd, will be welcomed by our Gaelic communities.”

Convener of the organising committee for Mòd an Òbain 2024, Donald MacLean, said: “This is great news. At a time when most of us are feeling the effects of the financial squeeze, the announcement of additional funding is important, timely and immensely welcome. This extra support will help to ensure that Mòd 2024 will be a real highlight for the town.”
