Wood workers share their passion for versatile material

Carpenters, crafters, joiners, sculptors and artists shared the fruits of their labour at the Inspiration of Wood Festival which took place over two days last weekend at Corrie and Sannox Village Hall.

The exhibition featured well-known sculptors Marvin Elliott, Robert Coia and Henry Murdo, as well as some of the lesser known wood workers who ply their trade on Arran.

As in years before, the festival included a wide range of professions and products, spanning from small ornaments and crockery to full-size boats and life-size sculptures.

A steady stream of visitors admired the craftsmanship over the two days and were also able to speak with the wood workers. Visitors were able to learn about the processes involved, received handy tips and tricks, and also learned valuable information about suppliers, stockists and other useful industry information.

In addition to viewing the finished products, visitors were also able to watch the craftspeople as they worked on their newest pieces, while picking up advice and knowledge about the methodologies used to create impressive wood creations. Outside in the small garden visitors enjoyed a demonstration of wood milling where Darran Owens of Arran Sawmill milled lumber from raw trees into useable timber and sheet materials.

In remembrance of former exhibitor and long-standing supporter of the festival, Stuart Gough, an exhibition of his historic tool collection was also on display for visitors to admire.

The annual Inspiration of Wood festival was not only a celebration of all thing wood for the exhibitors, it was also an enjoyable day-out for the entire family and those that appreciate wood, fine art and craftsmanship.
