Veteran DJs return to the decks to give helipad a boost

Two veteran DJs came out of retirement for ‘one night only’ to hold a 1980s-themed charity disco.

Revellers dressed to impress in tulle skirts, leg warmers and fishnet gloves when Archie Millar and John Armour returned to the decks in honour of the 35th anniversary of launching their mobile ‘All Nite Disco’ business.

“We had a great few years all around Kintyre and beyond,” said John, “providing the music for many functions and parties, as well as being the resident DJs most weekends in KDs lounge bar in Bolgam Street, where the Bangladesh Tandoori restaurant is now.”

In 2013, to mark their 25th anniversary, Archie and John hosted their first “for one night only” charity disco which proved to be a huge success.

“We did think that would be it, and had no intention of coming out of retirement again,” said John, “although we did use the equipment for family get-togethers over the years.

“On one of our regular nights putting the world to rights over a dram earlier this year, we came up with the idea of another ‘for one night only’ and, after discussions with Campbeltown Bowling Club and a couple of practice nights in the club, we set a date for another charity disco.”

The pair decided to make it a 1980s-themed night as that is the music they are most comfortable playing and the genre their “loyal fans” associate with them.

Thanks to “fantastic support” from their wives, Tracy and Carole, and their families and friends, tickets sold out well in advance of the event.

“On the night, the old equipment was as reliable as ever and we had a great night where it certainly looked as if everyone enjoyed it,” said John.

The event raised the fantastic sum of £1,130 which Archie and John agreed should be donated towards to the upkeep of the Robert Black Memorial Helipad, a facility they describe as “a godsend” to the area.

John said: “Archie and I would like to thank Campbeltown Bowling Club, everyone who came along on the night, those who provided raffle prizes, but especially our families who were so supportive in helping us bring it all together.

“We enjoyed the night so much that ‘for one night only’ may be back again in 2024 with another themed night. Keep looking out for details.”
