Lochaber pugilists take the plunge on Boxing Day

What do boxers do on Boxing Day?

Well,  the keen young warriors of Fort William’s Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club decided that a bit of training in the great outdoors was just the thing to work off Christmas dinner.

So in a temperature of minus one centigrade they pulled on their boxing shorts and went for a quick workout in a chilly Loch Linnhe with two of their coaches and enjoyed every minute.

As ‘carded’  boxers with Boxing Scotland aged between 11 and 18 with many bouts already under their belts, as well as few championship title holders amongst them, they took on the freezing temperatures and scored a win, with a run through the water to celebrate.

Coach Emma Launder, who along with her daughter Kia joined in the action, said: “It was the guys’ own idea.

“They are so dedicated that they would have been in the gym on Christmas Day if we had opened it up.

“It is great to see them so involved with the sport and what a way they chose to celebrate Boxing Day!”

Seventeen-year-old boxer Noah Johnston said: “It was a bit cold, but great fun and a bit different to our usual training sessions.

“Can’t think of any better way to spend Boxing Day.”
