Skye Camanachd 4 Oban Camanachd 0

Oban Camanachd suffered their heaviest defeat of the season when they went down 4-0 to Skye Camanachd in their 3pm throw-up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.

Skye’s James Pringle was a late call-off when he failed to shake off a foot injury, whilst Neil MacVicar recovered from a heavy cold to start in attack. William MacKinnon lined-up at full centre but he will miss Skye’s final match of the season against Kingussie at the Dell as he has gone through the disciplinary points threshold.

Daniel Cameron, Lewis Cameron, Blair McFarlane, Evan MacLellan, Scott MacMillan and Craig Macmillan were all missing for the Oban side, but Daniel Madej was back and Ross Macmillan returned after his suspension.

The pitch was playable, despite heavy rain during the week, but it cut up in places as the game went on.

There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw-up to mark the passing of former Skye Camanachd player and club vice president Richard ‘Ditchie’ Stoddart.

Skye manager Kenny MacLeod had been critical of his side for their slow start against Kyles the previous week, but the islanders were a different prospect this time around, attacking from the start with Cammy Sutherland making an early save with his foot from Jordan Murchison, then using both feet to keep out William MacKinnon’s effort before sweeping the ball away for a hit-in.

Skye broke the deadlock on 18 minutes. James Gillies played the ball forward from the left and with Jordan Murchison closing them down, the Oban defence was unable to clear its lines and when Neil MacVicar, at the front of the ‘D’, touched the ball to Ross MacKinnon on the right, he put it by the keeper.

The second half was just a couple of minutes old when Ross Gordon, in a central position, spotted an overlapping Neil MacVicar to his right and MacVicar’s glorious strike on the run flew into the top corner of the net to the keeper’s left to make it 2-0.

The game threatened to boil over at times and referee Iain Kennedy had his work cut out to keep matters on an even keel.

Skye had something to play for as they still required a point to secure their place in the Premiership next season. They were awarded a penalty when substitute Archie Millar was brought down after cutting into the ‘D’ from the right. Ross Gordon sent the spot-hit low by the keeper’s feet and it was 3-1 with 79 minutes played.

A couple of minutes later, Ross MacKinnon got his second goal of the game from outside the ‘D’ on the right after good lead-up play from Ross Gordon and Archie Millar.

Full back Scott McKillop was best on a poor day from Oban Camanachd, whilst youngster Alexander MacDonald continues to show his promise.

Another youngster, Skye’s Seonaidh-Alex MacLeod, turned in another top display after recently forcing his way into the side.

It was confirmed the following day that Oban Camanachd’s Louie McFarlane, who played wing centre in the game, suffered a broken collarbone in the game and will now miss the rest of the season.

Speaking after the final whistle, Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “Skye were far hungrier and sharper all over the pitch. Shinty isn’t a difficult game. You have to win your individual battles, but we didn’t win any of our battles today.

“We had boys making wrong decisions and half-hearting it and, at this level, you can’t do that.

“I said to the boys in the changing rooms that maybe they think they are up there because of what’s happened this season and they think they just have to show up to win games of shinty, but you have to earn it at places like this and we did nothing today so well done Skye who deserved it.

“Our boys need to go home and have a look at themselves because if they want to do anything, that is not the attitude to have.”

Skye boss Kenny MacLeod added: “I sometimes wonder if we are a cup team as we keep our best performances for games when the chips are down and we have to win. We didn’t want to leave it for other teams to decide our fate and we lit a fire under the players this week and they responded perfectly.

“We didn’t speak about winning. The message was not to lose the game because not losing is what we needed to do and what a performance. Everyone was terrific.

“Young Seonaidh MacLeod has come into the defence over the last couple of games. I know he will have ups and downs along the way, but he looks like a seasoned Premiership player. He was unbelievable.”

Oban Camanachd have two league games remaining. Next up is a meeting with Beauly at Mossfield on Saturday. Gareth Evans said: “We’ll have Daniel Cameron, Lewis Cameron and Blair McFarlane all back. They are three big players for us although, after Saturday’s performance, I’d make a lot more changes if I could.”

Beauly pair Euan MacCormick and Sandy Elrick will both miss the match as their bookings in the derby win over Lovat the previous week have triggered one-match suspensions.

Kyles Athletic 5 Kinlochshiel 0

Kyles Athletic beat Kinlochshiel 5-0 in their 2pm throw-up at Tighnabruaich.

Kyles Athletic trio Will Cowie, Callum Millar and Cammy Jack all picked up injuries during the previous week’s win at Skye. Cowie and Millar were passed fit, but Jack didn’t make it. Conor Kennedy and Finan Kennedy returned to the side.

Kinlochshiel hadn’t played for three weeks and they travelled without keeper Josh Grant, defender Conor Cormack and the versatile WD MacRae. Second team keeper Calum Macmillan was in goal and veteran Paul MacRae and youngster Arran Jack were included.

The rain during the week left the pitch heavy but playable. The throw-up was brought forward to avoid more forecast rain.

Kinlochshiel had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot, but John Whyte made a great save with his feet to keep out Jordan Fraser’s spot-hit.

Kyles built up a two-goal interval lead with goals late in the half from Will Cowie on 40 minutes and Conor Kennedy on 45 minutes.

There was action at both ends, with both goalies making good saves, but Ross Macrae’s strike on 70 minutes and Scott Macdonald’s third a minute later, put Kyles out of sight.

Conor Kennedy got his second on 76 minutes to round off the 5-0 win.

Whilst Kyles clearly deserved the triumph, the final outcome was harsh on Kinlochshiel who had chances in the game.

Kyles remain a point off the top of the table with two games to go.

Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Newtonmore 3

Newtonmore remain second in the Mowi Premiership on goal difference after coming from behind to beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-1 in their 3pm throw-up at Peterson Park.

Newtonmore co-managers Norman MacArthur and Evan Cheyne were unavailable, so Drew MacDonald and David Cheyne took charge of the side for what was their penultimate game of the season.

GMA settled first and took the lead through Calum McLay on five minutes.

It took some good goalkeeping from Jonathan Oates to keep the hosts ahead. GMA’s Calum McLay had the ball in the net again after the hour, but play was brought back following an infringement on Rory Kennedy.

What could have been a two-goal lead turned into level terms soon after when youngster Arran Byrne sent the ball into his own net when trying to clear a corner to make it 1-1 with 68 minutes played.

Newtonmore went on to win the game with goals from Daniel Craven on 77 minutes and Iain Robinson on 85 minutes.

Oban Celtic 2 Lochaber 2

Champions Lochaber were presented with the Mowi National Division trophy following their 2-2 draw with Oban Celtic at Mossfield.

Celtic went into the match knowing that Kilmallie’s win over Strathglass earlier in the day meant they couldn’t finish bottom of the table, so they played with freedom and Innes Jackson gave them the lead on 15 minutes.

However, Lochaber have stormed through the division this season and Pat Toal made it 1-1 on 27 minutes.

Celtic, in their final game of the season, got themselves back in through Jamie MacFarlane on 36 minutes but Lochaber levelled for a second time through Duncan MacKinnon on 49 minutes.

Following the final whistle, Lochaber skipper Pat Toal was presented with the Mowi National Division trophy with Oban councillor Jim Lynch and Camanachd Association director Roddy MacCuish present and Davie Hamilton organising proceedings.

Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Lochside Rovers 5

Lochside Rovers played their final game of the season and finished on a high, defeating the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team 5-1 at Peterson Park.

It was an early departure for Lochside for this noon throw-up and they were without one of their player of year candidates as youngster Alexander MacDonald was deservedly called up by the senior side for their trip to Portree.

However, Ross Campbell returned and soon made up for lost time with goals on eight and 15 minutes.

Former Oban Celtic player Mark Bain pulled a goal back on 31 minutes but, just a couple of minutes later, Ruaridh Buchanan restored Lochside’s two-goal cushion.

Ross Campbell completed his hat-trick on 35 minutes and his brother Scott Campbell made it 5-1 five minutes later.

The second half was a much quieter affair and there was no further scoring.

This was a tremendous result for Lochside, who are unbeaten since early June, and means they finish runners-up to an excellent Bute senior side.

The Lochside management team of David Macmillan and Duncan Macmillan are already preparing for next season when they are looking to be amongst the trophies.

Mowi South Division 2

Kilmory 3 Aberdour 1

Runaway Mowi South Division 2 champions Kilmory completed their league programme with a 3-1 victory over the Aberdour second team in their 2pm throw-up at MacRae Park.

Kilmory started well but didn’t open their account until 35 minutes when the prolific Bruce Johnstone netted.

Two more goals late in the half put the hosts in a comfortable position. Both came from Alec Cunningham, one a couple of minutes before the interval and another a couple of minutes into first half stoppage time.

Aberdour came much more into it in the second half and Ruari Drake-Reid pulled a goal back following a good move on 52 minutes.

Kilmory finished strongly but were unable to add to their tally.

All throw-ups were at 2.30pm unless the match report states differently.

Beauly 1 Kingussie 2

Kingussie stay top of the Mowi Premiership but they left it late to beat Beauly 2-1 at Braeview Park.

Beauly had no margin for error going into this clash as they needed to win to preserve their chances of maintaining their top-flight status.

Kingussie’s bid to retain the league title suffered a blow the previous week when they lost at Caberfeidh, but they were in no mood for a repeat. Kingussie travelled light as Robert Mabon picked up a one game suspension, Rory MacKeachan was on holiday. Fraser Munro remained out injured whilst James Falconer didn’t recover from a foot injury in time.

Savio Genini and Lee Bain both returned, with Genini on the bench and Bain at centre.

There were no goals during the first 45 minutes, but Finlay MacLennan gave Beauly hope with a strike two minutes into the second half. The strike was disputed with Kingussie claiming the ball went out of play in the lead-up to the goal, but referee Deek Cameron waved away the claims.

Beauly only stayed in front for five minutes though as substitute Savio Genini made it 1-1, touching a ball from the right before sending it low across the keeper into the far corner of the goal.

It remained level until three minutes from time and, just when they needed him, Kingussie’s Ruaridh Anderson popped up with another late goal, gathering Savio Genini’s pass and turning quickly before scoring into the far corner from the right of the ‘D’ to win the game.

London Shield Final

Fort William U17 4 Glenurquhart U17 0

Fort William’s under 17s won the London Shield, adding it to the cottages.com MacTavish Juvenile Cup won earlier in the season, when they beat Glenurquhart under-17 4-0 in the final at the Dell.

This 2pm throw-up was only seven minutes old when Innes Whyte cut in from the left and wasn’t closed down. His low shot took an awkward bounce as it went through the keeper’s legs.

Archie MacKinnon then scored twice in 60 seconds, on 32 and 33 minutes, to put Fort William in control. First, MacKinnon turned by his marker on the right before cutting across goal and firing high into the net on his backhand.

Then the Fort skipper crashed the ball high into the goal from a tight angle on the left following a good ball up-field from Oban Celtic player Ewen Campbell.

Jack Kearney made it 4-0 on 49 minutes when he found time and space on the right to smash the ball high into the goal to the keeper’s left.

Glenurquhart’s Sam Burnett received the Sandy MacKay medal as player of the match before Fort William captain Archie MacKinnon stepped forward to receive the London Shield from Camanachd Association director Kirsty Deans.

Speaking after the final whistle, Archie MacKinnon said: “We took a while to get going, but once we got the first goal, it all came after that.

“We were a wee bit slow again at the start of the second half, but we then picked up and held the lead. It was a good game.”
