Dunvegan Primary holds Gaelic song and drama workshops

Dunvegan Primary School on the Isle of Skye held two days of Gaelic song and drama workshops for its Sgoil-Àraich and Gaelic medium pupils recently.

Organised by the Highland Council Gaelic Team, the sessions on September 19-20 were led by artist Arthur Donald and local Gaelic musician Kathleen MacDonald.

Sessions allowed the Gaelic medium students to try their hand at both drama and song, with the Sgoil-Àraich pupils joining for the singing.

Head teacher Samantha Muir said: “The young people all thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Gaelic song and drama workshop.

“It was great to see pupils engaging so positively in Gaelic activities and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in organising the sessions that supported the pupils’ language learning and enabled our pupils to gain a greater insight into the Gaelic language and culture.”

The sgoil-àraich nursery class at Dunvegan Primary School joined in the singing workshops.

Councillor Calum Munro, chairperson of the Highland Council Gaelic Committee said: “I am delighted that the Gaelic activities delivered at Dunvegan Primary were a success with the Gaelic medium pupils and Gaelic teaching staff. Initiatives that support Gaelic Education and enrich the Gaelic language and culture within the formal education setting are important for our young people.

“Providing opportunities to use the Gaelic language within a fun and creative setting encourages and increases Gaelic usage within our school communities. I would like to acknowledge the financial support the project received from Bòrd na Gàidhlig.”

The Highland Council said its Gaelic team is planning to offer more drama and Gaelic song workshops at Dunvegan Primary School next year.
