Swimming season starts with success for Kintyre

The swimming season got underway with Kintyre swimmers travelling to The Portal leisure centre in Irvine to compete in the North Ayrshire meets.

Kintyre Amateur Swimming Club’s senior swimmers were first to compete in the North Ayrshire Age Group Development Meet on the first day of the recent competition.

Lucy McFadzean, aged 13, had a fantastic start to the season, swimming personal best times in all seven events entered.

She placed second in the 200m individual medley, 100m backstroke and 200m breaststroke, and placed third in the 100m butterfly and the 200m freestyle.

Older sister Cara, 15, took silver in both the 100m backstroke and the 200m freestyle.

Although she did not make the podium in the 50m freestyle, she was delighted to achieve a personal best time in this event, finishing fourth in 31.88.

She continued to make the podium with excellent swims in the 200m individual medley – a new personal best – and 100m backstroke taking bronze in each.

Twin sister Emma had an outstanding swim in the 100m breaststroke, recording an excellent personal best knocking more than five seconds off her time to take third place.

Emma finished second in the 200m backstroke, in a new short course personal best, and had a strong early season swim in the challenging 400m individual medley where she finished second. She finished off the meet with gold in the 200m butterfly.

The following day, only one Kintyre swimmer, 11-year-old Kyle McQuaker, took to the water to compete in the North Ayrshire Children’s Graded Meet.

Kyle started well with a new personal best in the 50m butterfly, finishing fourth. With strong opposition from South Ayrshire Swim Team, Kyle followed this with a strong swim in the 100m freestyle, touching in in first place in 1:18.03.

Kyle continued to show excellent early season form with personal best times recorded in five out of his six remaining swims.

He collected silver in the 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, with further gold medal winning swims in the 50m and 100m backstroke.

In his final swim of the afternoon, he paced himself well and broke clear of the field with 50m to go to take gold in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:53.13.

Kintyre’s head coach Stuart McQuaker said he is delighted with the start to the season, adding: “With a number of swimmers now recording West District times, things are looking promising for the season ahead.”
