Anne celebrates 100th birthday in style

A long-time recent resident of Campbeltown, Anne Thomson, has celebrated her 100th birthday in style.

Anne was born on October 12, 1923, in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, as one of four children and spent her early years in that area, later working as a seamstress in Glasgow.

While in Glasgow, Anne met her husband-to-be, Robert (Bob) Thomson.

Bob was from a long-established Campbeltown family, and he worked for several years as a printer for the Courier, in Campbeltown, before moving to Glasgow, still in the printing trade.

Anne and Bob married in 1954, setting up home in Eaglesham, and later emigrating to Canada in 1974, to follow their dreams.

The call of Scotland remained strong and, following their retirement, they returned “home” in 1995, eventually settling back in Campbeltown in 2004; initially in Glebe Street, later moving to Meadow Park in 2008.

They became active members of the Campbeltown community. Both Bob and Anne had seen active service during the Second World War – Bob in the Marines, Anne in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force – and, logically, they became members of the Royal British Legion Scotland Campbeltown branch, participating in parades and being involved in various coffee morning events, among other activities.

Both Anne and Bob loved walking, and could often be seen around Campbeltown and the surrounding area, sometimes venturing further afield.

Sadly, Bob died in 2012, though Anne remained at Meadow Park for a further nine years, before eventually moving to the Newton House Care Home at Newton Mearns to be closer to her extended family.

Anne has celebrated her incredible 100th birthday twice. First at a house party organised by nieces and nephew Dorothy, Jean and Robert, which involved almost all members of her extended family, including nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces, various in-laws and  great-great nephews.

Then followed a party laid on at the Newton House Care Home.

“The manager, Lara, and staff did Anne proud, with music, food, balloons and fun,” said niece Dorothy. “If you get the chance, you should view a short video which has been posted on the Facebook page of Newton House Care Home, showing Anne’s grand entrance to the party: you will be amazed! What next? Strictly…?”

Anne’s care home helped her celebrate in style.

Also, as a surprise, a nostalgic visit to Anne’s birthplace of Eaglesham was arranged, to view the house in which she was born – with the co-operation of the current owners – one century earlier, bringing back many memories.

“Anne remains fit, and in good spirits, continuing her love of Kit-Kats and chocolate fingers,” added Dorothy.

“She is a remarkable lady at the age of 100. She carries on with good humour, keeping the care home staff amused – and on their toes!

“Anne had long been looking forward to her “telegram from the Queen” but was equally delighted by the special card from King Charles and Queen Camilla.

“Now, on her way to 101, we wish Anne nothing but the best.”
