Driver banned for 14 months for drink driving

Driving after drinking four pints of beer has resulted in a Balvicar man being disqualified for 14 months and fined £420.

William Jones, 56, of 15 Balvicar, near Oban, appeared at the town’s sheriff court on Wednesday October 18.

He pleaded guilty to driving near Sea View Terrace, Ellenabeich, with 66 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on August 17. The legal limit is 22mgc.

Fiscal Rebecca Reid said police were in the area when they had reason to stop Jones’ vehicle. She said: “Police observed the accused smelled strongly of alcohol.”

He provided a positive breath specimen before being taken to Oban police station.
Solicitor Jane MacNiven said Jones had consumed roughly four pints of beer at the local pub prior to driving. The first offender was driving back to Ellenabeich to drop his partner off. It was a three-mile journey.

Sentencing, Sheriff Euan Cameron told Jones, “You chose to drive after drinking four pints. Your actions were selfish and in doing that you exposed other people to significant risk.”

He noted that Jones qualified for the drink driver rehabilitation scheme.
