Cross country league returns to Lochaber

Lochaber Athletic Club is to host its first North District Cross Country League race for the first time in 15 years.

Around 30 clubs from Grampian, Highland and the Western Isles will descend on the fields at Achintee Farm on Saturday October 28, with at least 250 runners competing across seven races.

This includes a 1,600 metre race for 9 to 11 year olds; a 3,500m event for under 13s; a 5,000m race for under 15s and an 8,500m race for under 17s and seniors from 18 to 80 years old.

The first junior race starts at 1.15 pm with the last race, for senior men and women, at 2.15pm. The last race will be the largest with between 120 and 150 runners.

Supporters are welcome with parking available at the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre. Races start just across the bridge and on the field next to the track running up to the Ben Nevis route.

There will be a gazebo and markers at the start and finish lines with plenty of grass, mud and hills in between.

The event is supported by Jahama/GFG Alliance and encouraged by the area’s farmers.

“Hopefully we will get a good day for this, as 15 years ago much of the lower part of the course was flooded with several cms of water. It will go ahead regardless,” said a Lochaber Athletic Club spokesperson.
