Improvements required as Fort William face Clach round two

Fort William Football Club will be looking for improvement as they take the trip to Evanton to play Clachnacuddin this weekend, writes Peter Newman.

The two sides found themselves locked in stalemate 1-1 at the end of September in the home fixture.

Although this lead to a penalty shootout for the Simon Shields Memorial Trophy, which the Claggan Park men retained, the league draw hurt Fort William’s title chasing ambitions.

Further than that, it had needed an Andrew McLean bullet header in the 91st minute to rescue the point after Aidan Mackinnon had scored from the penalty spot in the opening ten minutes.

Goalkeeper Kit Fletcher had to be in top form and later foiled Mackinnon from the spot again.

Here, the management team of Alan Gray and assistant Darren Duncan will be looking for significant improvements.

“This season there have been glimpses of what we can achieve,” said Alan.

“We’ve played some outstanding football in pieces. Fast moving, few touches, moving the ball quickly and really showing teams what we are about.

“What has let us done is basics: defensive set pieces and being timid in front of goal.

“We need to concentrate as a team, from one to 11, and we need to concentrate for the 90 minutes on doing our basics well. When we do that, we look superb and I’ve no doubt we can be a handful for anyone.”

Last weekend’s match against Inverness Athletic was cancelled as a result of the visiting team being unable to travel because of a road traffic collision and weather conditions.
