Scottish tree festival takes root

This year’s Scottish Tree Festival, organised by Discover Scottish Gardens, is on now until the last golden leaf falls to the ground.

Gardens and estates across the country are holding events to celebrate the richness of the autumn landscape.

One of the best places to enjoy the spectacle is Benmore Botanic Garden near Dunoon where an avenue of Giant Redwoods leads to a steep hillside clothed in trees from the Orient, the Himalayas and the Americas.

Thanks to its climate, history and links to the pioneering plant hunters, Scotland has a unique collection of trees that includes not just native species but some of the finest trees to be found anywhere in the world, including many that are endangered in the wild, and as part of the Scottish Tree Festival there will be walks, tours and trails designed to help members of the public enjoy the beauty of Scotland’s woodland wonders.

Other places to enjoy the magnificent autumn canopy include Ardkinglas woodland garden near Cairndow, Attadale Gardens in Wester Ross where visitors can discover Tree Facts, Folklore and Fairytales as they explore this designed landscape with its views over Loch Carron; Castle Kennedy Gardens near Stranraer, Floors Castle in the Borders, Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhinns of Galloway and Blair Castle in Perthshire where a Squirrel Trail has been created for young visitors.
