Funding available for island groups helping with cost-of-living crisis

Island charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations working to help ease the cost-of-living crisis are invited to apply for funding.

The money comes from the Scottish government’s Islands Emergency Cost Crisis Fund with the North Ayrshire allocation for Arran and Cumbrae distributed by Arran Community and Voluntary Service (ACVS).

Third sector groups are invited to apply for amounts ranging from between £50 and £5,000 from a funding pot of £30,000. Applications for more than £1,000 should be seen as inspirational to be considered.

The fund is in recognition of island communities which face increased costs compared with those on the mainland. Island communities have been particularly hard hit as they navigate the cost-of-living crisis as a result of island specific issues including the affordability of ferry travel; the cost of getting supplies onto the islands; difficulties accessing benefits advice and increasing fuel prices.

It is hoped this additional money will help the island communities who have been disproportionately affected by cost-of-living challenges.

To be considered for grants, applicants must offer activities or events that meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Supporting access to food with dignity

• Reuse and recycle: assisting communities to live in a more sustainable and economic way

• Helping to tackle travel or transport-related issues so communities or individuals can access services/resources that help ease the effects of the cost-of-living crisis or

• Target residents’ immediate needs and offer help to those struggling because of the cost of living.

Councillor Alan Hill, cabinet member for communities and islands, said: “These grants offer crucial support to island charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups on Arran and Cumbrae. Now is the time for people to come forward and find out more so they can get applications in before the deadline of November 10.

“A lot of important work is being done in island communities to support those who are most in need and this funding will be a great help in breaking down barriers and tackling challenges specific to the islands.”
