Light up Oban

Oban needs your help to shine out for Christmas.

The switch-on date is November 25 at this year’s Reindeer Parade and to make the town look its most dazzling, funds are still on a festive wish list to put towards the illuminations.

Last year, festive lights organisers ran a successful appeal to be able to buy new lights and to rent more to top up the town’s own dwindling supply but the hope is to make the 2023 display even bigger and brighter.

There will be a collection at the town’s fireworks display but more volunteers are needed to be out and about with collection buckets.

The lights appeal also wants to her from venues in the town willing to be a collection point for donations.

“We are just a small group of volunteers coming together to give Oban a brighter and better lights show. People still seem to think the council provides the lights but they haven’t done that for years. We had to start from almost nothing.

“Last year we bought a few and we rented some as well, We are trying to build on what we have but there’s a cost to that. Last Christmas we rented a Pingu who was very popular at the clock tower. This year we’ll be having an interactive Santa although we’re not sure where he’s going just yet.

“If everyone in Oban gave £1 each that would be £8,000 straight away!” said lights volunteer Sue Barnard.

She added: “With all the events that the Winter Festival are running and our lights, we can make Oban a special place to be this festive season.”
