Oban Ladies defeated by dominant Ayr side

Oban Lorne Ladies played league leaders Ayr at Glencruitten on Sunday and it was clear from early on that the visitors wanted to dominate the game.

This forced Oban into a huge defensive effort and through using their centres and wingers, Ayr put plenty of points under their belts within the first 20 minutes.

However, some crucial defending in the Oban’s own 22 denied the visitors from scoring another try and kept the hosts in the game.

Despite, having players playing in different positions, Oban fought hard to run hard lines and their work paid off when Kirsty Sinclair made a break through Ayr’s defence.

The captain managed to secure Oban’s first try near the posts, which was successfully converted by vice captain, Ellie Picken.

Ayr consistently used their speed and strength to make yards, with the visitors taking a 7-19 lead into the interval.

Strong defence and carries from Sinclair and Poppy Mckillop proved vital for Oban, with forwards Ailsa McCuish and Jordan MacIntyre putting in big hits to stop Ayr in their tracks.

The opposition had a strong forward pack, but with hard work from Oban they managed to contest some lineouts and disrupted some of the Ayr plays, giving Oban a chance to get the ball moving.

Julie Campbell showed her strength and grit and managed to score a second try for the hosts, with Picken again adding the extras to take Oban’s tally to 14 points.

Unfortunately for Oban, the Glencruitten side were hindered by injuries and position changes.

They struggled to match Ayr’s strength and speed, which the visitors used to rack up more tries and travel home with a convincing 14-54 victory.
