Kilmelford has got its bridge back, with villagers and a piper turning out to celebrate the first vehicles crossing it on Monday. The previous bridge had to be demolished after it was damaged by severe weather last month.

Some of the businesses worst hit by October’s floods are calling on Argyll & Bute Council to give them a rent and rates amnesty to help them recover.

Meanwhile, there are concerns following the appearance of cracks on McCaig’s Tower, which is arguably Oban’s most recognised landmark. The council is having the listed Historic Monument assessed following reports from concerned residents of the town.

This Saturday is fireworks night in Oban and donations will be collected there for Christmas lights, which will be switched on at the Reindeer Parade on Saturday November 25.

In other news, our Invest in the West campaign has been shortlisted for the UK journalism industry’s Making a Difference Award, with the deadline for voting 5pm on Wednesday.

This recognises our calls for increased funding and demands for a better focus on specific needs for rural communities across the West Coast and Highlands.

In the sport, Bob MacIntyre wasn’t far off from taking golfing glory at the Qatar Masters last weekend as he secured a top-10 finish with a new caddy and putter.

Oban Saints will return to action on Saturday when they face Houston United in the first round of the Scottish Amateur Cup.

There were mixed fortunes for Oban Lorne’s rugby sides, with the men putting 50 on Annan and the ladies losing out to Ayr in a tough encounter.

Adam Brook also took another win in the Oban & District Darts League on Friday night, with others including the ever improving Jack Whitley putting in impressive performances.
