Spreading the word about Gaelic on Mull

Gaelic chat is popping up all over Mull.

Mull & Iona Gaelic Partnership is spreading the word of its informal conversation nights to encourage more use of the language. So far, those taking part age from their 20s to 70s, says partnership secretary Shannon MacLean.

Conversation events were being run sporadically before May this year when regular monthly sessions began. They have been held at different venues, from The Mishnish and Westerns Isles Hotel in Tobermory, to Salen Hotel, Creel Row in Fionnphort and The Bellachroy in Dervaig last week.

Next month’s meet-up will be a Christmas wreath-making workshop on Saturday November 25 in Tobermory – venue to be confirmed.

“The pop-up events are open to everyone, whether it is someone who is interested in starting to learn or are already fluent-speaking. The idea is to create a relaxed, informal space for people.

“The use of Gaelic is really picking up here, helped by the new Gaelic unit at Bunessan Primary School and the unit at Salen. We are hoping that surge of interest and enthusiasm will keep spreading to adults,” added Shannon.
