Remembrance this weekend

To mark remembrance this weekend, a number of events have been organised.

This Saturday, November 11, there will be a service at Oban’s Garden of Remembrance in George Street at 11am.

On Sunday November 12 the remembrance parade will muster from 10am at the Corran Halls ready to leave at 10.30am to make its way to the memorial for the traditional laying of wreaths, which will include a replica of a wreath that was laid at the memorial’s unveiling. Uniformed organisations as well as the Lord Lieutenant of Argyll, Jane Macleod, and Argyll’s Provost, Maurice Corrie will be taking part.

Also as part of this weekend’s commemoration and remembrance celebrations, there will be a Flypast by 6 Squadron on Friday morning at about 11 am. The two aircraft will fly past the Oban War Memorial on the Esplanade in tribute to the fallen of both Wars and the Falklands Campaign. A Royal Navy presence from the warship HMS Pembroke will also be there.

While this will be an opportunity for photography, it is important to note that the airspace above Oban and Oban Bay will be subject to a Temporary Restriction known as a NOTAM. This prohibits the flying of drones in the affected area.

The Royal British Legion Easdale Branch has its Community Acts of Remembrance on Saturday November 11 at Luing War Memorial at 11am and at Balvicar War Memorial at 10.45 am on Sunday November 12, followed by a Remembrance service in Kilbrandon Church at 11.30am. These services will be led by Fiona Cruickshanks.

Kilmelford also has a gathering at its war memorial at 11am on Sunday followed by a service in the village church at 11.30am led by Campbell Baldwin.

In Craignish Village Hall, Rob Stephen will lead a special service at 9.45am  before marking remembrance at Craignish War Memorial at 11am.
