Taste ye back for haggisfest

Haggis makers from all over Scotland will be in Oban this month competing for the coveted title of Haggisfest champion.

Last year’s Winter Festival winner of the Golden Haggis Award was Grant’s of Taynuilt.

Butcher Mark Grant enjoyed a double taste of success, winning both the judge’s best choice and the people’s vote and he will be back to defend his titles.

Mark’s partner Morag Robertson says he has been making the Scottish delicacy for 10 years now and is “in it, to win it”.

She told us: “You never know until the day, it all depends who’s there. They come from all over to take part. One year there was a woman from the Isle of Ulva. It’s the taking part that counts.”

The judges’ decision on the Golden Haggis Award will be final.

Oban Winter Festival’s Haggis & Whisky Festival 2023 starts at 12.30pm on Sunday November 26 at Oban Distillery. Each entry must consist of one ball of haggis weighing a minimum of 500g. Winners will be announced at about 3pm.

Runners-up in the 2022 championship were Forsyths’ of Peebles in the Golden Haggis Awards, while the runners-up in the people’s vote were McCaskies, Wemyss Bay.

Other butchers who took part in the event included John Saunderson of Edinburgh, The Buffalo Farm from Kirkcaldy and Auchtertool’s The Farmers Son.
