Tarbert faces potential fine for failing to play cup game

Tarbert AFC said it is facing a potential fine and censure from the Scottish Amateur FA after the club failed to fulfil its Scottish Cup fixture away to Salsburgh on November 4.

Tarbert AFC secretary Bruce McNab said that 12 of the Tarbert squad – most of whom work on fish farms – had to work a Saturday shift and could not travel for the game, while several players were injured.

“Having had 23 players to pick from the previous week, they had seven available last Saturday,” said McNab.

“There are an awful lot of the boys that work on the fish farms and they work one [weekend] in three and if things are really busy they call on them to come in.

“Up to a dozen of them were on shift last weekend. It was just one of those unfortunate situations.”

Scottish Amateur FA National Secretary Thomas McKeown said Tarbert AFC’s local committee will “assess the reasons” for Tarbert not fulfilling the fixture and that a fine and censure are not automatic.

He said Tarbert will be “given the chance to explain their circumstances”.

The national secretary said: “The committee has the power to fine them or to take any further action.”

This weekend, Tarbert AFC is hoping a strong squad is available for its scheduled league game away to Bearsden.

Tarbert sit in sixth place in the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL Division 3 while Bearsden are bottom of the table with no points.
