Search on for planet’s young protectors

Oban Rotary Club is on the lookout for a top young environmentalist.

Club members want to hear from anyone who is passionate about the planet and wants to take part in its Rotary Young Environmentalist 2023/24 competition.

This year’s theme is ‘Waste Minimisation’ and entrants will have until January next year to come up with exciting ways on how to cut down on waste.

Rotary Club of Oban’s Youth Convenor Dot Dahl said: “This is the first time we have held this competition in Oban. I’ve met so many young people who are aware of the environmental challenges we face and I’m looking forward to some innovative and interesting ideas on how we minimise waste.”

The more original the project the better, says Ciorsti Baxter, Rotary Club of Oban president.

“We’re excited to bring this competition to Oban and, like Dot, I really want to see our young people get their hands dirty,” she said.

Finished projects must be in a digital format, such as an audio or video report, a written report with illustrations, photographic or artistic presentations or building an app.

The closing date is January 12 2024 and the competition is for individuals or teams of up to four.

There are three age groups: junior, up to and including 10-years-old; intermediate for 11 to 13-year-olds and a senior category for 14 to 17-year-olds. Participants must not have been over the upper age limit for their age group from August 31 this year.
