Community is big business on Lismore

Congratulations are in order after islanders successfully took over Lismore’s lifeline shop and post office this week.

Tuesday saw about 80 residents – almost half of the island’s population – gather early morning to witness its doors open for the first time under community ownership after an incredible DIY-style campaign was launched to raise funds.

In a remarkable achievement that is still growing, Lismore Community Trust’s initial £70,000 target to take on the shop through community shares and other sources, brought in an extra £10,000 with donations continuing to come in.

Residents, holiday home owners and visitors to Lismore were all asked to help, with more than 230 contributions so far made over the last five weeks contributing to this  good news story.

What Lismore has achieved here is a fine example of how big thinking by tiny islands really works, aided by dedication, determination and the generosity of those who believe in and back the cause of community empowerment.

This week we also applaud the hardworking volunteers behind Oban Winter Festival for bringing us a packed programme of joyful events and gatherings to warm up chilly days and light up November’s dark skies. It’s not done yet as there is still lots more fun to be had. To see the full winterfest line-up visit https://obanwinterfestival.com/
